First Dance Ideas. What to do? What to play?

First dance ideas

Let’s talk first dances

For over 10 years now since we started in 2009, we’ve been asked the same question.

What should I do for my first dance, or do I need to have a first dance?

Let’s go back a touch… The first dance is a wedding tradition that stems back many years, it symbolises lots of things, but in today’s times it usually means the dance floor is open for business!

Outdoor wedding ideas

But do I need to do a first dance? Nope do you heck, it’s your day so do what you like.

We often get asked. What should I do? Do we have any Wedding tips to help? Well, without further ado, here are our top tips on how to have the perfect first dance to suit you as a couple.

  • Choose a song that’s personal to you, if you love the song then your guests should too.

Some of our faves

    • Stevie Wonder – Signed sealed delivered
    • Colbie Caillat – Bubbly
    • Elbow – One day like this (amazing song, just make sure you invite guests up! 6 mins is a long time to sway)
    • Starship – Nothings gonna stop us now
    • Marvin Gaye – How sweet it is (to be loved by you)

  • Have fun, it’s a lovely moment so just enjoy yourselves, smile and be in the moment.
  • Choose a time that suits you. In the UK we predominately have the first dance in the evening after the wedding cake If you want to be different though, you can follow our friends in the US and have it earlier on. They normally have it after their grand entrance into their meal, or between courses. Has that got you thinking?
  • Alternatively, if you want to separate memories in the evening, choose to cut your cake earlier in the day or before evening food. Then leave your first dance to be a ‘special moment’ on its own, or have it with your father/mother, daughter dance.
  • I want my first dance to really stand out and make my guests go crazy? How about starting slow, then mix in a dance or fun track. You could also have a sax player join you half way through for the ultimate ‘wow’ factor. Check this out for ideas from our Vimeo channel: https://vimeo.com/270178178
  • Why not take your first dance outside (if your venue can accommodate it)? Say what?! Yep, do it! Dare to be different just like Naomi & Jack did Mitton Hall with as photographed by Wambam Weddings

  • I don’t want a first dance! Cool don’t do it! It is your day; you don’t have to do anything you are not comfortable with.
  • Instead, why not have a first dance with all your family and friends. “Ladies & Gentlemen please can I ask you all to join *insert your names here* onto the dance floor as this evening the couple’s first dance will involve you all.”
  • You could add a little extra cuteness… We’ve had clients leave a personal message on their first dance track. A little voice note over the track from you to them. You can keep it a surprise! If you want ‘wow’, you’ve got it!!
  • Do you play an instrument? Add that in to your first dance. Has that got you thinking? Don’t forget we can all play the tambourine.
  • Who says your first dance has to be a dance? Who says you can’t have a dance off for your first dance! We’ve seen it, it’s awesome! Make your wedding go viral!

As always we hope we’ve helped give you some inspiration to create the most amazing wedding day!

Dreaming of the perfect night for your #perfectwed Dreaming of the perfect night for your #perfectwedding ? Have you thought about #newyearseve ??? If not we recommend you consider it. We’ve had some of the BEST weddings ever on that special night! Here’s some #weddingtips for your #weddingplanning

1️⃣-Plan early, get your #weddingvenue & suppliers booked asap!

2️⃣-Send out those #savethedate cards just as quick!

3️⃣-Think #glitznglam . New Years Eve is traditionally the night to get dressed to the 9s and party like it’s 1999.

4️⃣-Plan your day with midnight in mind. Work with your DJ or band to bring in NYE with style and one that your guests will remember!

5️⃣-Hire a babysitter for those family and friends with children, you don’t want to be left on the dance alone as the clock chimes 00:00.

6️⃣-Transport & Hotels. Think early for booking accommodation; put on transport for guests staying further a field.

7️⃣-Order enough #champagne to fill a swimming pool, you’ll need it at midnight. Just don’t forget to provide a bit of h20 as well! No one wants an early finisher.

8️⃣-Costings, NYE will ultimately cost you more as suppliers and venues normally add on a bank holiday fee.

9️⃣-Plan your day with a later start time, if you want guests to still be partying hard well after midnight, roll with a lazy morning in preparation for a long night.

🔟-From experience, NYE is one of the best nights to get married. If you want to have the anniversaries of anniversaries then NYE is the night for you.

Kerry’s #weddingtip 👇🏼

Your wedding day isn't the time to experiment. You want to feel beautiful in your own skin so that when you look in the mirror, you see a polished, radiant and confident version of YOU.
If you're not a big make up wearer normally, you don't have to pack it on for your wedding day. However, if you love a vintage vibe and love to rock a red lip and a wing, then flippin go for it!
My goal when pampering my brides is to achieve a beautifully flawless make over that truly reflects their personal style.
If you do fancy adding a bit of extra flair to your look, why not change your lippy in the evening? It's a really easy way to switch up the glam for when you hit the dancefloor!
